Remember that you probably know more than your legislator about severe mental illness. Always maintain a respectful and friendly tone. Write the words clearly and legibly in the center of an envelope, and then seal the letter inside the envelope.

Try To Keep Your Letter As Close To 250—300 Words As Possible, While Including Enough Information About Why You Are Writing To Them.

In the next paragraphs, describe the bill and explain and support your position. If you are sending a legislator a letter (instead of an email) be sure to also send the letter via email and fax. Keep in mind that the letter will probably be read by a legislative aid, so a brief letter is best.

The First Paragraph Should Include A Greeting And A Request For Specific Action To Be Taken By The Legislator.

Due to security measures, letters can be delayed. If you are writing concerning a pending vote, email is your best option as security screenings may delay receipt of a physical letter by up to three weeks. Tell your elected official why this legislation matters in his community or state.

Step 4 / Ask What Do You Want Your Legislator To Do?

It also doesn't hurt to mention if you voted for or donated to them. Always maintain a respectful and friendly tone. I am an advanced practice registered nurse (aprn) in (state/jurisdiction).

Keep Your Letter Short And Direct.

Tell your legislator how bills will affect you, your family, or your friends. Senators visit our national elected officials page. Write it in your own words.

Say Why You Are Writing And Who You Are.

The first paragraph of your letter should state your position/request/reason for writing. Those steps include increasing the availability of treatment courts, diversion, ending cash bail and abolishing mandatory minimums. State who you are and what you are writing about.
